Canvas — Industrial Tech Office

The San Francisco office and workshop of Canvas provided the backdrop for this shoot, with interiors recently redesigned by Rae + Heath Architects (Austin Heath Riley and Megan Rae Hannon). My job was to capture not just the architecture, but the way these spaces are used in everyday work. To bring that sense of life into the photos, I asked my clients and their assistants to step in as models, giving scale and activity to the frames.

The resulting set included wide views of larger interiors along with tighter compositions that highlight Rae + Heath’s careful use of tone, texture, and graphic detail. One of my favorite frames looks down a hallway with a floor-to-ceiling window that overlooks Canvas’s massive workshop space. Through the glass, you can see one of their drywall finishing robots in action — a reminder of the company’s innovative role in construction technology.

This project is a good example of how architectural photography and workplace photography overlap. The images not only document the physical environment, but also reflect the design intent behind it and the culture of the company using it. For firms in San Francisco and the wider Bay Area — whether architects, designers, or creative companies — this type of office interior photography provides a way to showcase both the aesthetics of the space and the story of the people working inside it.
